Goth Almanac

Two hundred and two years ago today, Edgar Allan Poe was born. He is remembered fondly for his dreary, beautiful, haunting dark poetry, short stories and other writings. Many goths have wept themselves into depression over Annabel Lee and The Raven. I cannot overstate the influence Edgar Allan Poe's writings had on the development of the modern goth scene, as well as the horror literature field. Today begins a series of celebrations in Baltimore, Maryland, for the bicentennial anniversary of Poe's birth.

January 19, 1996 - From Dusk Till Dawn - Movie - Released

I seem to recall this wacky vampire movie being really well recieved, at least in our scene, after it came out. With Robert Rodriguez directing and Quentin Tarantino in charge of the script, this bloody comedy horror movie was really cool. Dozens of fan websites sprung up and hung around for a few years, and lots of screencaps were shared. Nowadays there isn't much fan love for this sure-to-become cult classic.

Dominique Dunne, who played the older sister in Poltergeist, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend.

I was disappointed by Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein. Noisy, boring, and drones on and on. Sort of like the director. But hey, it stars DeNiro as The Creature.

Before Brendan Fraser got chunky, he turned in a beautiful performance in Gods and Monsters with the legendary Ian McKellen.

Has any movie delighted goths (in general) more than The Nightmare Before Christmas? It seems to have been made just for us.

I had such high hopes for Igor, with my favorite actor ( John Cusack) doing the main voice. Soooo disappointing. Meanwhile, Underworld was pretty enjoyable, though I could do without the many sequels. I remember how amazing the Underworld trailer was - beautiful and really made me excited to see the film.

My parents weren't interested in watching The Addams Family when it came out, because it "looked too weird" and "was probably Satanic." (See what I had to grow up with? Sigh).

The Haunting, based on a Shirley Jackson novel, would be remade several times.

Meanwhile, Hellraiser was probably the scariest, grossest movie I had ever seen in the theater at the time. (Yes, I'm that ancient an eldergoth, I saw this in theaters). I was suitably impressed and very intrigued by the female cenobites.

Bela Lugosi starred in many important early horror films, including Dracula and several Frankenstein-themed films. He's the honored subject of the extremely popular Bauhaus song.

The Bride is one of my favorite movies just because it's so pretty to look at, what with Sting and the period costuming. . Not scary or horrific, but a nice peek into the Bride of Frankenstein's side of the story.

August 11, 2007 - Sophie Lancaster - Goth - Attacked by teenagers

Sophie Lancaster was a goth girl who was attacked in a park in Lancashire for wearing goth clothing. She died from her injuries in the attack. Her death was extremely upsetting to the goth community. Many tribute pages and web banners were created to commemorate her. The Sophie Lancaster Foundation is still active.

Stuart Gordon is known for directing H.P. Lovecraft movies, including From Beyond, Re-Animator, and Dagon.

She's best known for her short story The Lottery, but also wrote the novel The Haunting of Hill House.

The Haunting (1963) on Amazon

Published in 1959, it didn't take long for the novel to be turned into a movie, The Haunting, which premiered in 1963. The film was remade in 1999.

Boris Karloff was the penultimate horror actor, starring in dozens of horror films in the early 1900s. He's probably best known for his role as the monster in Frankenstein.

You may remember Dominique Dunne from her role as the older sister in "Poltergeist." She was murdered by her boyfriend in 1982, only a couple of weeks before her birthday.

Aah, one of Keanu's worst accents (and acting) ever. But he was still beautiful to look at, as was Winona Ryder. I can't forget Gary Oldman's super cool purple tinted sunglasses, either. The costuming on the film was stupendous and the sets lavish.
